ARPA forms
United States forms Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in response to the Soviet launching of Sputnik to ensure that America maintains a lead in applying state-of-the-art technology for military capabilities.
1969
Universities connect online
ARPANET goes online in December, connecting four major U.S. universities: UCLA, Stanford Research Institute, University California Santa Barbara, and University of Utah. Designed for research, education, and government organizations, it provides a communications network to link the country in the event that conventional communications systems become disabled.

The Internet icon @ is used for the first time to format email addresses by Ray Tomlinson. It enabled the sender’s name to be separate from the network or business name.

Network Solutions founded
Network Solutions, an engineering company, is founded by Emmit J. McHenry, an Arkansas born entrepreneur.
1984
Domain Name System published
The Domain Name System (DNS) is established, with network addresses identified by extensions such as .com, .org, and .edu. Words instead of numbers pointed to systems on the Internet to make it easier for humans to interact with Web sites using names instead of long numbers.

“Surfing the Net” is coined by Jean Amour Polly.
